Hulk Will Smash

Today’s Kirby-goodness comes courtesy of North Carolina based artist, Loston Wallace. First up there’s the Green Goliath himself, which features a mighty colouring job by Steve Downer, followed by a host of sketch-book workouts featuring some favorite grotesques from Tales to Astonish/of Suspense.

Loston is an alumni of the Joe Kubert School of Art and has provided artwork for the role playing industry as well as the DC Comics Licensing Department producing children’s books based on DC’s animated properties. His comic credits include: Klyde & Meriem, Flash Gordon and Lorna, Relic Wrangler. You can find more of Loston’s work at his website and DeviantArt page.

Savage Thing

Today Kirby-Vision features two gorgeous pieces of Kirby inspired artwork courtesy of Bill Reinhold. Above you will find commission artwork of a surly Ben Grimm in black ink and wash, and below Bill inks Jack’s pencils for a piece that originally appeared in Gary Martin’s The Art of Comic Book Inking.

Bill is a renown penciller/inker who kicked off his comics career in the early eighties. Since then he has worked for all the major comic publishers on a host of books such as The Punisher, The Badger, Earth X, Green Arrow, Detective Comics and Jack of Fables. The co-creator of the Epic Comics mini Spyke, Bill is currently illustrating Magnus Robot Fighter for Dark Horse Comics. For more check out Bill’s extensive portfolio at DeviantArt.

Marvel Two-in-One #74

A three pronged homage here, The Thing and Puppetmaster battle the Island of Mis-fit Toys (from the Rankin/Bass production, Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer) in a re-creation of Frank Springer‘s cover for Marvel Two-in-One #74. Penciled and inked by Jeff Potter and colored by Wheeler Hall, it’s a perfect reminder that the holiday season is just around the corner. Lockjaw, a recent commission piece, by Canadian artist Tom Fowler. Tom’s diverse career has encompassed advertising, game design and the movie industry. His comic credits include Mad Magazine, Green Arrow, Batman: Legends of the Dark Knight and Mysterius: The Unfathomable. Ben Grimm, the ever lovin’ blue eyed Thing, is this week’s choice at the collective sketch blog, Comic Twart. Aunt Petunia’s favorite Nephew was chosen by Evan ‘Doc’ Shaner, whose fantastic contribution above features no less than five Kirby creations.

This dynamic rescue scene, which also features Reed Richards, comes from the brush of Francesco Francavilla. Francesco’s pulp inspired artwork has graced the pages of Zorro, The Black Coat, Sorrow and the forthcoming Garrison. He is the creator of Black Beetle, whose adventures can be found every Sunday at Franceso’s blog, Pulp Sunday. The Thing in Steel

This 2ft tall 400lb steel bust of the ever lovin’ blue eyed Thing is by Wisconsin steel fabricator Steve F/BrokenHill. Ben Grimm and Jack Kirby’s work have been a major influences on Steve’s art ever since 6th grade. You can follow the evolution of this fantastic piece over at the PencilJack forum, where you can also find some of Steve’s drawings. Pepo’s comics work includes Orígenes Jaque Mate: Sangre‘ and ‘El Vecino‘ and he has also contributed illustrations and articles for the magazines ‘Volumen‘ and ‘Rock de Lux‘.
