Today is Jack Kirby’s 93rd birthday.

Mark Evanier has a post with a neat photo.
Harry Mendryk has a nice selection of original art scans. And if you haven’t already, check out Harry’s recently completed series of posts on the S&K romance comics.

This link should lead you to a lot more around with blogosphere.

Didn’t get time to do a special post I was planning for the date, unfortunately, so here are links to 93 prior posts about comics with Jack Kirby work in them:

Upcoming Kirby – 1970s Cap and some Thor

by

Several Kirby reprints just announced from Marvel.  His complete 1970s run on Captain America, previously collected in 3 softcover volumes, gets a massive hardcover edition.  A collection of a recent Thor storyline includes Kirby’s final issue of the series, and the following issues concluding the story he started, and a collection of 1970s Thor includes a run of a dozen issues, three of which featured Kirby covers.  The new softcover release of Doctor Strange in the Masterworks line will apparently include the original covers, unlike the original hardcover release.  It sounds like it’ll be all the covers, not just the handful that feature Doctor Strange, if so that’s a few Doctor Strange covers by Kirby , a lot of Human Torch covers (some with the Thing) and a few Nick Fury covers.  Sadly they’re still cutting it off a few issues prior to finishing Ditko’s run. Some of the early Loki stories are included in a collection of a recent Loki mini-series.

By the way, Marvel’s been running a few unannounced reprints in the back of some books, I guess in an attempt to justify the increasingly ludicrous amount they charge for a new comic.  The first Captain America story was reprinted in STEVE ROGERS: SUPER-SOLDIER #1 and the 1965 “Origin of Captain America” from TALES OF SUSPENSE #63 ran in CAPTAIN AMERICA: FOREVER ALLIES #1.  Presumably there might be some more that I didn’t hear about.

Upcoming Kirby – Kirby owned concepts return

by

As you may have heard, it’s just been announced that Kurt Busiek and Alex Ross will do something called KIRBY: GENESIS for Dynamite.  Links and a large copy of the promotional poster by Ross over here.  As Busiek mentions, and as seen in the poster, this will include not just previously published Kirby Estate owned concepts like Captain Victory, Silver Star, Satan’s Six, Phantom Force and The Ninth Men but also a lot of things never published or seen in single illustrations.  Galaxy Green (from the proposed “Fat City Comix”) is there on the bottom middle next to Egghead.  Honir and Sigurd (from the “Gods” portfolio) are there on the right, near Paranex the Fighting Fetus.  A couple of those aliens to the right of what I assume is the grasping hand of Darius Drumm are from a 1972 piece seen in the centerfold of the 2004 TwoMorrows KIRBY UNLEASHED portfolio.  On the other side of the hand, I’m not even sure that guy has a name, but he was on a recent KIRBY COLLECTOR cover and apparently done the same time as Kirby’s original New Gods proposal.  A few of the other characters are vaguely familiar (I think one of the small figures is Ramses), probably from issues of the KIRBY COLLECTOR, a few others are complete mysteries.

Anyway, hopefully in the publication we’ll see a lot of pages of the Kirby designs, and maybe this will help expedite the publication of the long-delayed Captain Victory collection and maybe some books of all the other Kirby-owned comics (haven’t heard anything about the Destroyer Duck collection in a while, either, although those characters probably aren’t part of this deal, being co-owned by Steve Gerber, just as it seems the Joe Simon co-owned characters aren’t involved).

New Kirby – Mid-year update

by

Busy half-year for Kirby publications. Highlight of the half-year is the Newsboy Legion reprint of golden age S&K material from DC.

Only one issue of TwoMorrows’s long running fan magazine, with some interesting stuff on 1960s Marvel, plus some stories from Kirby’s work for Gilberton’s WORLD AROUND US.

THE JACK KIRBY COLLECTOR #54

A few reprints from DC. Obviously the Newsboy Legion one is the most important. Really good stuff, and their reproduction from printed comics improves with every book.  A few of Kirby’s more obscure 1970s creations with only one published story each get reprinted in books collecting later appearances of the characters.

THE NEWSBOY LEGION BY SIMON & KIRBY HC
KOBRA: RESURRECTION TPB
SUPERMAN: THE COMING OF ATLAS TPB

A few reprints of public domain material, Lockjaw and Earl the Rich Rabbit in the IDW book and a few crime stories in the Pure Imagination re-issue of the 1980s Eclipse collection.

GOLDEN COLLECTION OF KLASSIC KRAZY KOOL KIDS COMICS [IDW]
TEEN-AGED DOPE SLAVES AND REFORM SCHOOL GIRLS TPB [Pure Imagination]

And of course a raft of reprints from Marvel in various formats. The recent re-coloured reprints of the Tales of Asgard back-ups get collected. The old hardcover Masterworks line has one volume with a lot of Kirby monsters, while the softcover line has a whole lot of his super-heroes. The black-and-white Essentials line gets to some 1970s material where Kirby did the covers, and a few other reprints had single Kirby stories.

THOR: TALES OF ASGARD BY STAN LEE & JACK KIRBY HC

X-MEN VS. AVENGERS PREMIERE HC
X-MEN VS. FANTASTIC FOUR PREMIERE HC

No slowdown in the second half of the year.  The highlight should be the second book Joe Simon is doing through Titan, THE SIMON AND KIRBY SUPERHEROES, a 480 page hardcover including just about all the non-DC/Marvel superhero work the duo did, including the complete Fighting American, Stuntman and a lot more.  Last I heard the hope was to have some copies out for the San Diego Con in a few weeks, and general release soon after.  Also highly anticipated from DC is THE BOY COMMANDOS BY SIMON & KIRBY HC, the first book of one of the great kid-gang feature.  Also one more issue of THE JACK KIRBY COLLECTOR this year, probably some more public domain reprints and of course a bunch of stuff from Marvel, heavy on the Thor for obvious reasons.  Updates over here, as usual.

Upcoming Kirby – T-shirt edition

by

A few years ago Graphitti Designs re-issued many of the t-shirts Marvel produced in the 1960s, most of them having original Jack Kirby art.  More recently they did a Galactic Bounty Hunters shirt, still available.  Now, they’re getting into some of Kirby’s DC characters:Page 374 of the July 2010 Previews if you’re asking for it at a comic shop, no doubt soon to be added to the Graphitti website for ordering as well.

Those are nice, but I’m a bit surprised they didn’t go with a Darkseid for the initial offering.

Upcoming Kirby – The Commandos are Coming. So is Thor

by

Some big Kirby stuff coming late this year. A Simon&Kirby classic comes out in the first of hopefully many Boy Commandos collections. Thor gets a big book in advance of his feature film debut, and the FF softcover colour collections continue.

OMAC #7 [1975]

by

The One Man Army starts his battle against “The Ocean Stealers” in the 18-page story in this issue.  Sent by the Global Peace Agency to investigate a lake which has suddenly lost its water, we open with some great images of Kirby’s vision of a lake bed full of exposed and crushed plant and animal life.  Finding an odd cube in the middle of the lake, he finds it unnaturally heavy, and gets a power boost from Brother Eye to move it, but even that might not be enough.

Next we meet the evil scientist responsible for all this, Doctor Skuba, a water-obsessed madman who has found a way to compress water into small bars, including one giant one which will absorb the Atlantic Ocean.  When OMAC tracks down his lair Skuba recognizes the atomic manipulation that created OMAC being similar to his own science, and is able to use that similarity to restore OMAC to his Buddy Blank form.

OMAC is a lot of goofy fun with wild ideas thrown out at every turn. This adventure was obviously intended to be longer than the two issues it lasted, and I wonder if the connection between Skuba’s science and the technology used to create OMAC would have been explored.

D. Bruce Berry inks the 18-page story and the Kirby cover, with mixed results.  Several pages look really good, especially the 2-page spread, and any of the renderings of technology, but I don’t think he fully captures the right look on the faces all the time.

Upcoming Kirby – Various Marvels

by

A trio of upcoming Marvel books in various formats. Four previously un-reprinted Vision stories in the GOLDEN AGE MARVEL COMICS v5 book. Hopefully when they’re done there’ll be a book of just the Vision stories so you won’t have to buy four $60 hardcovers just to get them all. SILVER SURFER #18 gets another reprint in the softcover Masterworks line, and a run of 1970s THOR issues that had Kirby covers gets a reprint (you’d think there was a movie coming out or something), presumably including all the relevant Kirby covers, at the very least including one as the overall cover.
