Kamandi, The Last Boy on Earth! #25 [1975]

While there’s a lot of worthwhile stuff in them, I don’t think most people would argue that the second half of Kirby’s 40-issue run on KAMANDI is weaker than the first half, as he had used most of the more exciting ideas and was just going through the motions for a while.  The 20-page “Freak Show” in this issue is a case in point.  Shipwrecked on an island with the recently befriended Flim-Flam and his human “animals”, Kamandi is pleased to reunite once again with Ben Boxer and the other atomic mutant companions of his (Earth A.D. seems to be kind of small, they keep running into each other after a few issues apart).  They encounter various odd and dangerous mutations of sea-life, leading up to the flying sharks featured on the cover, until they finally approach a giant wall that even those monsters won’t go near.

So not one of the more notable issues, mostly moving the pieces around to the next adventure, but some of the creatures are pretty cool.

D. Bruce Berry inks the story and the cover.

A few years back I read the entire run of Kamandi for the first time since it originally appeared. It turns out I enjoyed it more than I thought I would. As always, Kirby came up with a slew of ideas and created exciting and offbeat images of animals and creatures. Kamandi was a likable character, trapped in an insane world. Not his best stuff, but a lot of fun most of the time.

Ok,that work.Wasn’t I’d be able to post here.Anyway,of all DC Jack Kirby Kamandi was far the best.I liked to put.Didn’t he looked a tiny version of Thor.Didn’t care the world was freely stolen those Planet of the Ape movies.I liied for a time.My problem was Kirby seemed lose focus of the character and world.Kamandi had many adventures, but by the later issues it just as he’d never do anything the big bear in the room-mankind being turned into stupid cattle.I was hoping some Kamandi grow and do something anything help out his fellow humans. But it just dum with Gullivar Effect.Kirby said I’m leaving sometime after that and so did I.I guess alot readers followed, since was cancelled sometime later on.
Kamandi was fun for the early issues, but sometimes fun never lasts.
