New Kirby – Fighting American softcover

by

Doesn’t look like it’s shipped through all channels yet, but I just got a copy of FIGHTING AMERICAN, the new softcover book from Titan reprinting the 1950s Simon&Kirby classic, so comic shops and retailers like Amazon should have it within weeks.

The 200-page book mostly duplicates the middle section of last year’s hardcover THE SIMON AND KIRBY SUPERHEROES, slightly smaller and softcover, so much more affordable, and with a short new introduction by Joe Simon.  It’s a definite upgrade from the 1989 hardcover version of the book from Marvel.

New Kirby – Collector #56 and lots of Marvel

by

THE JACK KIRBY COLLECTOR #56 is out now out, look for the bold and more than slightly strange early 1970s Galaxy Green cover:

There have also been a lot of Marvel releases with Kirby reprints in the last few months.  A lot of Thor and Captain America for some reason…  Most notable is ESSENTIAL CAPTAIN AMERICA VOL. 6, which reprints the balance of Kirby’s 1970s run picking up where v5 left off.  So Kirby’s full 1970s run on Cap, including the tabloid, has now been reprinted three times. Who’d have predicted that a decade back?

-Link- Kirby in early Comics Journal

by

On THE COMICS JOURNAL website they’ve begun to put up complete scanned issues from the earliest days.  As I understand it eventually these archives will only be available to subscribers, but right now they’re open to all.  Some Kirby content in those earliest issues (when it was actually THE NOSTALGIA JOURNAL), most of which was reprinted in the 2002 COMICS JOURNAL LIBRARY v1 – JACK KIRBY special (which is still available and you can get a free copy with a JOURNAL subscription), but it’s interesting to see it all in the original context.

From #27, the first Fantagraphics issue, a 1971 Kirby radio interview.

From #30, a Kirby/Sinnott cover, and the first half of a 1969 interview with Kirby.

From #31, the conclusion of that interview, including the penciled version of the cover to #30.  And the cover to #31 is by Dave Cockrum, but it’s a topless drawing of Big Barda which might be of interest.

Upcoming Kirby – Potential cover

by

Genesis West is publishing a book by David Schwartz and Michael Thibodeaux, THE POTENTIAL, with the Kirby/Thibodeaux cover seen to the right.  Love those giant figures in the background.

THE POTENTIAL (2% HERO, 98% COWARD) VOLUME 1 GN
(W) David Schwartz, Michael Thibodeaux (A) Michael Thibodeaux
With great power doesn’t necessarily come great courage! The Potential realizes this and wants to avoid getting squished, splattered or smashed!  He tries to avoid trouble, but he’s made a deal to be a super hero. Will he grow comfortable with danger or will he keep trying to weasel out of his commitments? Find out! Cover by Jack Kirby!
Softcover, 7×10, 140pgs, $16.95

Upcoming Kirby – Marvel summer and some later stuff

by

Some interesting stuff tentatively scheduled for later this year.  As you can see on the right, there’s a possible cover design for the previously mentioned S&K LIBRARY: CRIME volume Titan is publishing.  Harry Mendryk says the October date listed on Amazon is probably early, but I look forward to it whenever.  Joe Simon’s autobiography and the softcover FIGHTING AMERICAN are also coming from Titan.

DC has some stuff showing up in the long-term listings on Amazon, which may or may not change.  KAMANDI OMNIBUS v1 would be the first half of Kirby’s run, released a few years ago in two volumes in the Archives format, so we might get a second book with the mostly unreprinted half of the run.   And there’s a JACK KIRBY’S FOURTH WORLD OMNIBUS v1 softcover listed, no idea if that’s a straight reprint of the hardcover series which reprinted the family of books in chronological order or something else.

And of course, lot’s of Marvel stuff just solicited in various formats.  Mostly stuff that’s been reprinted multiple times in better formats, but some unreprinted Vision stories from MARVEL MYSTERY in there.  Three more to go after this upcoming reprint, hopefully we get a separate collection of all 15 of the Vision stories at some point.  And I don’t think that Kirby FF #200 cover in the Fantastic Four book (the only Kirby content in there) has been reprinted before.

Upcoming Kirby – Joe Simon autobiography

by

Titan is publishing JOE SIMON: THE MAN BEHIND THE COMICS (or possibly JOE SIMON: MY LIFE IN COMICS), a 256-page hardcover autobiography by Joe Simon, later this year, which should be one of the biggest Kirby-related publications of the year.  The cover may look like one of these two:

Joe Simon: The Man Behind the Comics

In his own words, this is the life of Joe Simon, one of the most important figures in comics history and half of the famous creative team Simon and Kirby. Joe Simon co-created Captain America, star of this summer’s anticipated movie blockbuster, and was the first Editor-in-Chief of Marvel Comics (then known as Timely, where he hired Stan Lee for his first job in comics). He recounts the near-death of comics, the Congressional witch-hunts of the 1950s, and the scramble for creators to survive. In the process he reveals what it was like to bring comics out of their infancy, as they became an American art form.

Upcoming Kirby – Theakston biography

by

Greg Theakston’s biography of Jack Kirby, JACK MAGIC, previously scheduled as a one-volume edition in 2008, is now being solicited as a 2-volume work, with the first scheduled to come out later this year from Theakston’s Pure Imagination.

Jack Magic Vol. 01: Life & Art of Jack Kirby

by Greg Theakston & Jack Kirby The long-awaited biography of Jack Kirby, The King of Comics! Written by Greg Theakston, Jack’s workmate and personal historian, it’s a detailed study of Kirby’s life and career. Included are extensive quotes from Kirby, Joe Simon, Will Eisner, and many more. Profusely illustrated with classic art and family photos.

Upcoming Kirby – Various things

by

A few recently scheduled Kirby things.  Not sure how much actual Kirby there’ll be in the KIRBY GENESIS comic, but the #0 issue does have his Pioneer plaque (and it sounds like the plaque plays a role in the story).  Lots of stuff from Marvel, either tying in with movies or continuing their Masterworks line.  DC’s KIRBY OMNIBUS is the big release from this list, all of his non-Challengers 1950s work for the company, plus a few stray 1940s pages. Genesis West is also offering a hardcover of JACK KIRBY’S GALACTIC BOUNTY HUNTERS through Diamond, but I’m not clear if that’s a new printing or just copies of the Marvel/Icon edition from a few years back.

THE JACK KIRBY OMNIBUS VOL. 1 STARRING GREEN ARROW HC
Written by VARIOUS
Art by JACK KIRBY and others
Cover by JACK KIRBY and MIKE ROYER
In 1957, Jack Kirby returned to DC Comics to draw the Green Arrow feature that ran in ADVENTURE COMICS and WORLD’S FINEST COMICS, pitting the Emerald Archer and his sidekick, Speedy, against a plethora of foes. At the same time, Kirby kept busy with work on DC’s mystery titles. These short tales spotlighted extraterrestrials and earthly monsters, nuclear threats and super-intelligent animals, magic wishes gone wrong and cities lost beneath the seas, challenging Kirby’s ever-fertile imagination in every story.
Now, for the first time, DC Comics collects all of Kirby’s many stories from the pages of HOUSE OF MYSTERY, HOUSE OF SECRETS, TALES OF THE UNEXPECTED, MY GREATEST ADVENTURE, ALL-STAR WESTERN, ADVENTURE COMICS, WORLD’S FINEST COMICS, as well as a trio of 1940s stories from REAL FACT COMICS.

Upcoming Kirby – THE S&K LIBRARY: CRIME

by

Thanks to Dan in the comments for the heads-up, Amazon now lists upcoming from Titan THE SIMON AND KIRBY LIBRARY: CRIME scheduled for October 2011.  Usual caveats on book listings this far out, everything is subject to change, from the release date to the title to the price to the page-count to the binding all the way up to the very existence of the book.  However, right now it’s listed as a 320-page hardcover for $50.  That would probably cover about half of the Kirby penciled stories in the crime genre from 1946 to 1952, most of them never reprinted before.  The examples I’ve read are excellent, so this should be a great book.  See Harry’s recent posts over on the Simon&Kirby Blog for a look at some of the stories and the true stories that may have inspired them.

-Link- Jack Kirby art on Antiques Roadshow

by

There’s an episode of the PBS show THE ANTIQUES ROADSHOW on in some markets tonight (check your local listings) featuring comics and artwork by Jack Kirby from his personal collection, brought in by one of his grandchildren.  See details here.  Video doesn’t seem to be up yet, but you can  see some photos and a transcript of the segment.  Especially interesting is the Boy Commandos ad, and the 1930s cartoon with the Kurtzberg signature.  I’ll update this with more details when I’ve seen the segment.

Okay, seen it now.  It’s a two minute segment at about the 45 minute mark of the show, if you want to see it next time it’s on.  Or just go to the link above, the video is live now.  The items were brought in by one of Jack Kirby’s grand-daughters, they don’t mention her name [Tracy Kirby, according to John Morrow].  Five really good pieces, well displayed in the video, and Kirby is credited as co-creator of many of his most well known characters by the resident expert.
