Upcoming Kirby – Various books announced

by

Quite a few Kirby books for later this year to catch up on.

First off, a way in the future (November 2010 by the latest schedule), but most interesting of the new books, DC will as expected add BOY COMMANDOS BY JOE SIMON AND JACK KIRBY VOL. 1 to the hardcover set that already includes SANDMAN BY S&K and the soon-to-be-released NEWSBOY LEGION BY S&K. There were a lot of Boy Commando stories, so even if they keep it at just the stories that Kirby had a hand in they could fill four volumes like this, which I guess would be the plan. If they tried to make it a complete set (which would include some early work by the likes of Curt Swan and Carmine Infantino) that would be about 10 books. Anyway, big year for S&K fans, especially if the Titan published S&K SUPERHEROES book comes out this year.

Greg Theakston is publishing TEEN-AGED DOPE SLAVES AND REFORM SCHOOL GIRLS, a book of crime comics that came out from Eclipse in 1989. If the contents are the same as the original, two S&K stories, “The Bobby Sox Bandit Queen” (HEADLINE COMICS #27 [1947]) and “I Worked For The Fence” (HEADLINE COMICS #28 [1948]).

And from Marvel, as usual, lots of stuff. MARVEL MASTERWORKS: ATLAS ERA TALES OF SUSPENSE VOL. 3 HC is about half-Kirby, with covers and one or two stories every issue. MARVEL MASTERWORKS: SGT. FURY VOL. 3 HC is one of those trivial Kirby reprints, with just one cover by Kirby in this run, but a good one (and the one they chose for the cover of the book). AVENGERS: I AM AN AVENGER VOL. 1 TPB includes reprints of the origin of the team from #1 and the line-up shifting #16. ESSENTIAL FANTASTIC FOUR VOL. 8 TPB gets to the period of Kirby’s return to Marvel, where he did most of the covers for the series. Should be about 15 Kirby covers in total.

MARVEL MASTERWORKS: ATLAS ERA TALES OF SUSPENSE VOL. 3 HC

Written by STAN LEE & LARRY LIEBER

Penciled by JACK KIRBY, STEVE DITKO, DON HECK & PAUL REINMAN

Cover by JACK KIRBY

It’s a jam-packed Tales of Suspense monster bonanza! And you know you can’t keep a good monster down. No way, no how, and before they revolutionized the super hero set, Stan Lee and Jack Kirby made monsters their daily diet. Klaag. Oog. Bruttu. Monstrollo. Skyscraper-tall lumbering beasts from outer space; muck-covered monsters from the Savannah swamps; lost world anachronisms from beyond time; and they were all here to teach humanity a lesson, whether we liked it or not. And after Kirby scares you with his creatures from the id, Steve Ditko will tear at your conscience—from the inside out—in tense suspense-thrillers cast with nervous-eyed dreamers and sweaty-palmed schemers, none of whom make it out with getting theirs. Each and every tale is executed by a master of storytelling—by the talents that defined the comic book medium for a generation—and each one is brought to you, gleamingly restored, in the fan-favorite Marvel Masterworks line! Collecting TALES OF SUSPENSE #21-31.

You’ll also see revealed—for the first time—the origin of Nick Fury’s eye-patch, follow Dum Dum Dugan as he goes it alone behind enemy lines, and experience the Allied push when Operation Overlord comes together on D-Day! The reconstructed “Lost FF” issue shows up in a paperback with some other stuff. PET AVENGERS has an issue of FF and a Kirby/Ayers monster story from JiM #57. Written by STAN LEE
Penciled by DON HECK with JACK KIRBY & DICK AYERS
Cover by JACK KIRBY & DEAN WHITE
Brought together to fight the biggest menaces in the Marvel Universe, Iron Man, Thor, Giant-Man and the Wasp represented the heavy-hitters of the super-hero set, but Marvel heroes don’t just hang out, they live, breathe, argue—and even fall out. In an innovative twist that would come to define the Avengers, Stan Lee chose to have those original Avengers depart, leaving Captain America alone to carry on. But it was who replaced them that really got reader’s attention. Hawkeye, Quicksilver and the Scarlet Witch—all conflicted and villains in their own right—became Cap ‘s new recruits creating a dynamic, unpredictable and exciting quartet that to many would become the Avengers’s heart and soul. So sit and back enjoy the evolution of Earth’s Mightiest Heroes as they battle Kang the Conqueror, the Mole Man, the Red Ghost, Count Nefaria, Baron Zemo’s Masters of Evil, the Mandarin and the Swordsman. With guest appearances by Spider-Man the Incredible Hulk himself, it’s a Marvel Masterwork from beginning to end! Collecting THE AVENGERS #11-20.

Upcoming Kirby – Hulk, Asgard and, um, Bromance?

by

Pair of expected reprints in the latest Marvel solicitations, as the softcover MARVEL MASTERWORKS continue monthly in the same order as the hardcovers, getting to the first HULK series, five issues of which are by Kirby, and the re-coloured TALES OF ASGARD series continues, if that’s your cup of mead.

And yes, they’re publishing something called MARVEL BROMANCE. The Kirby story is a pretty good 10=page Captain America and Nick Fury team-up with inks by Frank Giacoia.

MARVEL MASTERWORKS: THE INCREDIBLE HULK VOL. 1 TPB
Written by STAN LEE
Penciled by JACK KIRBY & STEVE DITKO
Cover by JACK KIRBY & DEAN WHITE
Dr. Robert Bruce Banner may have the appearance of a mild-mannered scientist, but after being caught in a gamma bomb explosion, he became the unstoppable engine of destruction known as the Incredible Hulk! Hot off the success of the FANTASTIC FOUR, Stan Lee and Jack Kirby’s atomic update on the Dr. Jekyl/Mr. Hyde tale, mixed the joy of giant monsters with Cold War intrigue and added a heavy dose of psychological drama to create a formula that even decades later has readers clamoring for more. So for each and every purple pants loving Hulkophile, the MARVEL MASTERWORKS are proud to present the Hulk’s original six-issue solo series in one amazingly restored volume. You’ll meet Bruce Banner, Rick Jones, General Thaddeus “Thunderbolt” Ross of the U.S. Army and the lovely Betty Ross for the first time. You’ll see the Hulk’s first appearance as the gray goliath before he turned that familiar shade of green. You’ll watch the Hulk bust knuckles with the far-out Toad Men, the subterranean Tryannus, monstrous Mongu, and the Metal Master, and to make it that much better, the incomparable Jack Kirby and Steve Ditko illustrate it all. Upcoming Kirby – INHUMANS MASTERWORKS and more

by

No shortage of Kirby reprints in the latest Marvel solicitations. The INHUMANS get a hardcover, including the back-ups from THOR, the Kirby written and drawn issues of AMAZING ADVENTURES and even one of Kirby’s NOT BRAND ECHH stories. I think all we need is a final THOR and a KA-ZAR MASTERWORKS to get all of Kirby’s Silver Age Marvel super-heroes reprinted in the Masterworks series. Oh, and I guess a few more NOT BRAND ECHH stories unless those were slipped in elsewhere? Anything else?

Elsewhere, the TALES OF ASGARD six-issue reprint is confirmed to be with very modern colouring, so buyer beware if that’s not your bag. Softcover Masterworks continue with a second X-MEN, and a few Kirby stories in some anthologies of mostly other stuff.

MARVEL MASTERWORKS: THE INHUMANS VOL. 1 HC
Written by JACK KIRBY, STAN LEE, ROY THOMAS, GERRY CONWAY & ARCHIE GOODWIN
Penciled by JACK KIRBY, NEAL ADAMS, MIKE SEKOWSKY & GENE COLAN
Cover by NEAL ADAMS
The uncanny Inhumans come to the MARVEL MASTERWORKS at last! In 1965, Stan Lee and Jack Kirby gave a strange family of outcasts their debut in the pages of Fantastic Four. Responding to their Shakespearean pathos and Kirby’s out of this world character designs, the fans loved them—and wanted more! The mysterious origins of Black Bolt, Medusa, Gorgon, Triton, Karnak and the rest of their wondrous, secret world was initially revealed in a series of Thor features. But that only whetted reader’s appetites—and so came their first headlining series in AMAZING ADVENTURES! Launched by writer/artist Jack Kirby, the new series took the Inhumans to their roots, defending their kingdom against the aggressions of mankind—especially against the ultimate threat of the Mandarin. Then a team with uncanny credentials, Roy Thomas and Neal Adams, took up the crown and sent the Inhumans on a mythical exodus into the world of man. It was a saga exploring the social issues of the era and, of course, topped of with a heavy dose of Inhuman action! Also featuring a rare Medusa and Black Bolt tale from MARVEL SUPER-HEROES and a trio of satirical tales from NOT BRAND ECHH by Stan, Jack and their blushing Bullpen! Collecting THOR #146-152, AMAZING ADVENTURES #1-10, THE AVENGERS #95 & MARVEL SUPER-HEROES #15 with bonus selections from NOT BRAND ECCH #6 & 12.

The Children of the Atom are back in their classic adventures from the Silver Age! Launched by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby, the X-Men blended super-hero action, teen angst, and a metaphor for the turbulent social and racial issues of the ’60s into one potent package! After laying the foundation for what would become comics’ biggest franchise, Stan and Jack passed the headmaster’s role of the Xavier School to Roy Thomas and Werner Roth, who would come into their own while crafting the tales of Marvel’s merry mutants. Collected in this second amazing MASTERWORKS volume, you’ll find the first appearance of the unstoppable Juggernaut, the cosmic Stranger, the mutant Mimic, and in a classic three-part saga, the mutant-hunting robot Sentinels. And for good measure we’re topping it off with the return of Magneto and his Brotherhood of Evil mutants and a two-part tale featuring Lucifer, the early nemesis of Professor X. They’re mutant milestones one and all! Collecting THE X-MEN #11-21.

Upcoming Kirby – SANDMAN BY S&K

by

A big collection of the S&K Sandman (1940s and 1970s) is officially on the schedule. I’m seeing conflicting reports on whether this is softcover or hardcover, if anyone can get confirmation I’d appreciate it. Either way, some good stuff, a lot of it never before reprinted.

THE SANDMAN BY JOE SIMON & JACK KIRBY
Written by Joe Simon & Jack Kirby
Art and cover by Joe Simon & Jack Kirby

At last, the classic 1940s Super Hero series by Joe Simon and Jack Kirby is collected from the pages of WORLD’S FINEST COMICS #6-7, ADVENTURE COMICS #72-97, #100-102 (1942-1946) and SANDMAN #1, the comic that reunited Simon & Kirby in 1974!

In the capable hands of Simon and Kirby, the Sandman left behind his trademark green suit, fedora and gas mask to become a brightly costumed adventurer on the trail of crime in the big city with the help of his sidekick, Sandy the Golden Boy. With a strong element of the fantastic in the form of haunted dreams and foes claiming to be figures of myth, these stories were perfect examples of the fast-paced, slam-bang adventures that made Simon & Kirby the most celebrated comics talents of the 1940s.

New and Upcoming Kirby

by

Catching up on some Kirby release info, stuff’s been coming out steadily this year. One I missed on solicitations was that THOR #600 reprinted several “Tales of Asgard” shorts as backups, but more on that in a bit. Biggest release of the year so far is tomorrow, a collection of Kirby’s dozen OUR FIGHTING FORCES issues.

March 11, 2009 – THE LOSERS BY JACK KIRBY HC
March 4, 2009 – COLLECTED JACK KIRBY COLLECTOR – Volume 7
February 25, 2009 – MARVEL MASTERWORKS: THE FANTASTIC FOUR VOL. 1 TPB
February 25, 2009 – MARVEL MASTERWORKS: THE MIGHTY THOR VOL. 8 HC
February 11, 2009 – THOR #600 (several Tales of Asgard short stories)
February 4, 2009 – MARVEL MASTERWORKS: THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN VOL. 1 TPB (a few covers and a short back-up)
January 28, 2009 – MARVEL MASTERWORKS: GOLDEN AGE CAPTAIN AMERICA VOL. 3 HC

And a few new things announced from Marvel. The TALES OF ASGARD mini-series will presumably include all 49 five-pagers from JIM/THOR #97-#145, and probably six rather than five issues as listed, but with Marvel you never know. I’m guessing a collection of them soon after is likely, if not certain, and hopefully the “modern coloring” won’t be that bad. I assume that recent THOR #600 was a sample of what to expect, so if anyone picked that up and wants to comment, feel free. And all three of Kirby’s YELLOW CLAW issues from the 1950s are included with some other fine stuff , much of it never reprinted before, in one expensive book.

THOR: TALES OF ASGARD BY STAN LEE & JACK KIRBY #1 (of 5[?])
Written by STAN LEE
Penciled by JACK KIRBY
Cover by OLIVIER COIPEL
The legend has come true! By the will of the gods, I am alive! I am invincible! I am — THOR!!! And so began the very first epic tale of Marvel’s most revered hero, the mighty Thor, whose legend would grow alongside the success of Marvel comics, making him the most exciting super hero of all time! Never has Thor been more sensational than during these early tales, crafted by Marvel’s greatest, Stan Lee and Jack Kirby. Re-live classic Norse mythology in the mighty Marvel manner as well as Stan and Jack’s stories of the Norse Gods and Thor before he came to Earth as Don Blake. Witness as these masters breathe life into the thunder god and some of Marvel’s most enduring characters: Helmdall, Balder, Loki, Odin and Hela. Read these stories as never before with all-new, modern coloring and six extraordinary interlocking covers by current THOR artist Olivier Coipel. Upcoming Kirby – Atlas, Vision and others

by

Couple of upcoming Kirby reprints announced recently. The issues of MARVEL MYSTERY in the Masterworks edition has the first four Vision stories, a few never reprinted before. Looks like the current plan is for the softcover Masterworks to follow the release order of the hardcover series, running monthly, so expect two volumes each of FF, X-Men and Avengers and one of the Hulk in 2009. Not sure what’s in that Fantagraphics SUPERMEN book, a few things could qualify under the premise. And that reprint of Atlas in the back of a book of recent Superman stories is out of left field.

SUPERMEN! THE FIRST WAVE OF COMIC-BOOK HEROES (1939-41)
Edited by Greg Sadowski; Introduction by Jonathan Lethem

Of the 22 stories appearing in SUPERMEN! the vast majority haven’t seen print since first publication, including the notorious 1939 Wonder Man debut by Will Eisner. Wonder Man lasted one issue after a successful DC Comics lawsuit cited the similarity to its son of Krypton.

This lawsuit inspired more individual and offbeat approaches, and it’s on these mavericks and oddballs we focus this collection. The roster features such notables as Basil Wolverton, Jack Kirby, Jack Cole, Fletcher Hanks, Ogden Whitney, Lou Fine, Charles Biro, Fred Guardineer, and Dick Briefer. Fighting villainy is hard work and in SUPERMEN! it’s downright ruthless.

THE X-MEN OMNIBUS VOL. 1 HC
Written by STAN LEE & ROY THOMAS
Penciled by JACK KIRBY, JAY GAVIN,
WERNER ROTH & JACK SPARLING
Covers by JACK KIRBY & ALEX ROSS

In 1963 the slow boil of the Marvel super-hero revolution exploded in a full eruption with a slate of new heroic adventurers that redefined comic-book adventure forever. Joining the Fantastic Four, the Amazing Spider-Man, Ant-Man, Hulk, Thor, Iron Man and Dr. Strange came the Avengers and an odd sister book featuring a weird assortment of brand new characters: Cyclops, the Beast, Iceman, the Angel, Marvel Girl, and the mysteriously-named Professor X. They were the X-Men, and little did anyone know that they would come to take the comic book business by storm. Stan Lee and Jack Kirby billed their new creations “The Strangest Super-Heroes of All!” and while their mutant powers were certainly weird, the binding concept of this band of heroes, a group feared, hunted and hated because the of prejudice of their fellow man was pure Marvel relevance, striking at the heart of Civil Rights battles of the time. So join us as we collect in this massive, painstakingly restored, archival volume as we recount the earliest adventures of the world’s most-famous super-hero team as they encounter for the very first time their nemesis Magneto, the Brotherhood of Evil Mutants, the Juggernaut, Ka-Zar and the Savage Land, Master Mold and the Sentinels, and many more of Marvel’s greatest heroes and villains. Supplemented with a bevy of behind-the-scenes bonus material, critical and historical essays, and original artwork, this volume is a bona fide must-have for each and every X-addict!
