New Kirby – Fourth World Omnibus v4

by

Shipping to comic stores this week is JACK KIRBY’S FOURTH WORLD OMNIBUS v4, finishing up with the remaining 1970s work and then the new work done in the 1980s (“Even Gods Must Die”, “The Hunger Dogs” and the Who’s Who profile pages of the characters). Some of that material, in particular “The Hunger Dogs” is going to look quite different from the originally published versions. It might be a few weeks before I get my copy, so feel free to weigh in with a comment on how the new version looks.

The New Gods books only show that comics have become more shallow and empty without Jack to make them fresh and interesting with his artwork.

Well all four volumes of the fourth world omnibus are now out. If there is anyone trying to decide if they should purchase these volumes don’t hesitate. The reproduction is as good as or slightly better than the old comics, and the photo collages are much better looking than in the old printings. Some people complain about the paper, I love it and much prefer the matte vs shiny coated paper. Personaly I prefer a matte paper unless I’m looking at an art book reproducing oil or acrylic painting where the glossy paper mirrors the glossy apperance of a painted surface. Kudos to DC for their decision to reprint this series in hardcover, the idea to present the stories in the order of first publication was a great decision as was the use of restored Mike Royer inks on the Hunger Dogs . I do have one complaint that being DC didn’t make further efforts to restore the Hunger Dogs art. There are many who like to slam Vince Colletta, count me as one, what I don’t understand is why there is any discussion at all over who is the worst inker ever over Kirbys’ pencils. Frankly Greg Theakston makes Vince Colletta look like Mike Royer or Joe Sinnott by comparison. At least Colletta only left things out, Theakston adds things which in his bizzare opinion help the well intended but dodering old man cross the street. Funny how people got all upset when DC had Murphy Anderson or Al Plastino fix Jacks Superman heads, but nobody noticed what Theakston did to Jacks’ own characters. Want a classic example, open the Fourth World Omnibus Vol.4 to page 359 ok, now open your copy of Jack Kirby Collector Forty-Six to page 45 as faithfully inked by D. Bruce Berry before Theakston got ahold of it and fixed it. This my friends is what is known as ” case closed “. Let’s hope that in the future DC can be convinced to have Mike Royer ink the Theakston debased pages from copies of Jacks’ pencils .
