Upcoming Kirby – Marvel in February 2007

by

A trio of later FF issues are reprinted among other contents in two hardcovers from Marvel due in February of next year, one to complete a DAREDEVIL crossover and the other two the same stories included in the recent STAN LEE MEETS one-shots.

MARVEL MASTERWORKS: DAREDEVIL VOL. 4
Written by STAN LEE
Penciled by GENE COLAN & JACK KIRBY
Cover by GENE COLAN

It’s an identity crisis for Daredevil as Matt Murdock juggles a bevy of baddies seeking to sully his good name while he juggles the triple-identity of Matt Murdock, Mike Murdock, and DD! You just might want to ready your slide ruler for tragedy with this kind of trigonometry.

After a dust-up with the Beetle, the Trapster attempts to trick the Fantastic Four into attacking DD by disguising himself as none other than ol’ hornhead himself! Wiser minds prevail, but only until none other than Dr. Doom steps up to the plate! In one of Daredevil’s most amazing Silver Age adventures, he goes toe-to-toe with Doc Doom – in opposite toes! You guessed it, the Latverian monarch switches bodies with Daredevil bringing on a battle that drags the Fantastic Four, Spider-Man, Thor into the mix in one of Marvel’s first crossover bonanzas!

As if kicking him out of his own body wasn’t enough, next the Exterminator tries to evict Daredevil from the time stream! With the Unholy Three at his employ to clobber the hornhead back into the Stone Age, he’s got a good chance of succeeding ’cause there’s at least one cast member that won’t be making it out of this adventure alive.
Collecting DAREDEVIL (Vol. 1) #33-41 and FANTASTIC FOUR (Vol.1) #73.

Upcoming Kirby – Kamandi Archives v2

by

Hey, this was kind of unexpected. Maybe they’ll actually get around to doing the full Kirby run on the book in this format.

Some Kirby stuff I should mention further in the future, DC recently announced that they’ll do a multi-volume colour hardcover series of Kirby’s Fourth World stuff, including all of the Kirby NEW GODS, FOREVER PEOPLE and MISTER MIRACLE issues from the 1970s, only some of the JIMMY OLSEN issues and the 1980s “Even Gods Must Die” and “Hunger Dogs” stories. Exact plans are still up in the air, they may be in original published order instead of split by series. Hopefully they’ll manage to make this go-round definitive (a few previous reprints have had a few odd modifications, like some sound effects obviously changed for a previous foreign reprint). More details when the first volume is actually on the schedule.

Upcoming Kirby – Marvel in November

by

Bunches of Kirby in the latest sets of solicitations. Good to see another THOR Masterworks so soon, given the gap between earlier volumes. That’s the last major 1960s series with a lot of Kirby to go. A bit pricey, but that third CAPTAIN AMERICA book finishes Kirby’s 1970s run on the character, and has some Arnim Zola action, so that ain’t bad. GALACTIC BOUNTY HUNTERS #3 has Kirby on the cover again (I think I recognize that main pose from something that ran in TJKC a while back, so probably one of those “modified in the inks” pieces). The MARVEL WESTERNS book presumably has all the reprint backups from the recent one-shots. Not sure if the Kirby cover on ESSENTIAL CAP #3 is accurate, as Kirby didn’t do any of the original covers in that run. There is a Kirby cover of questionable origin on the issue right before that run. But hey, pick it up for the Gene Colan art and the Nazi robots.

Quick reminder that I try to keep the newly released stuff updated on this page and buying from the Amazon links below and on that page send some of your purchase price to the Kirby Museum.

It all begins when the Thunder God is captured by Rigellian colonizers and taken on a trip to the Black Galaxy to confront the one and only Ego, the Living Planet! It’s non-stop action, action, action from there as he journeys to Wundagore Mountain to meet the matchless High Evolutionary and his menagerie of man-beasts! It all wraps up with a trio of titanic tussles between Odin’s Son and Ulik the Troll, the Growing Man, and the Destroyer! There’s a soft spot to these tales too, so don’t forget your hanky as Thor struggles to reconcile his love for the mortal Jane Foster, and then there’s the return of a certain Lady Sif…The cup runneth over with drama and delight!

Two big Kirby books in the latest solicitations. COLLECTOR #47 has a really nice cover and should have some interesting stuff, starting with the 1950s reprint. And the recent TALES TO ASTONISH Masterworks volume gets a companion piece with the first ten issues of TALES OF SUSPENSE. This one features 8 Kirby stories, several never reprinted, and 7 Kirby covers. JACK KIRBY’S GALACTIC BOUNTY HUNTERS also continues, though no Kirby cover on the third issue.

Also included is a rare KIRBY interview, MARK EVANIER’s regular column, two pencil art galleries, a complete never-reprinted 1950s story, an interview with “The Disappointment Artist” author Jonathan Lethem about Kirby’s influence on him, and an interview with JOHN ROMITA, JR. on his work with NEIL GAIMAN revamping Kirby’s ETERNALS! Upcoming Kirby – September 2006

by

Marvel’s got a trio of Kirby publications scheduled for September. I’m most looking forward to the third ESSENTIAL THOR, which has some spectacular stuff, bring us a half-book from the end of Kirby’s run. I’m sure some people will enjoy the HUMAN TORCH MASTERWORKS, which is about half-Kirby, with all but one of the Kirby illustrated Torch solo stories (he came back for #120 which will be in volume 2). I’m not quite sure what I think of the MARVEL SPOTLIGHT thing yet, but I’m pretty sure I’ll get it.

And from AC Comics is MEN OF MYSTERY: CHAMPIONS COLLECTION VOLUME 1 TP, a big tradepaperback with various reprints, including some undefined amount of Kirby.

Cover by JACK KIRBY
Turn back the clock to 1962. After the debut of a quiet little magazine called The Fantastic Four and a relatively unknown teen hero named Spider-Man, Mighty Marvel decided to go out on a limb and put these two risky ideas together into a featuring starring…The Human Torch. With Jack Kirby on art, man, talk about yer risky business, True Believers.
But, believe it or not, yes, even with that kind of pedigree it was a sure-fire hit! Johnny Storm the thrill-seeking, impulsive teen wonder of the Fantastic Four set the world on fire in these scorchin’ solo stories!
He’s going to head-to-head against none other than Namor the Sub-Mariner, Spider-Man, Captain America, Paste-Pot Pete, the Wizard, the Sandman and the Living Bomb! If that ain’t diagnosis teenage angst, than you can call me Freud!

Upcoming Kirby – Marvel in July 2006

by

Lots of Kirby stuff in the most recently announced Marvel books. The third silver age CAPTAIN AMERICA MASTERWORKS finishes up that Kirby run on the character. The second BLACK PANTHER book finishes up another Kirby run. I’m guessing this new MARVEL’S GREATEST COMICS line, reprinting full books from scans of the original comics, is going to be scattered comics tying in with current stories, not continuing on with FF. Couple of western rerprints in back of new western stories, including the third reprint of the origin of the Rawhide Kid in two months. Plus GALACTIC BOUNTY HUNTERS debuts, with a Kirby cover.
