Please join Jack Kirby’s granddaughter Jillian in helping comic creators in need!

Jack Kirby’s granddaughter Jillian, daughter of Neal and Connie Kirby, has fired up her Kirby4Heroes campaign again this year to honor what would have been her grandfather’s 96th birthday. Here’s Jillian’s video:

Jillian has recruited comic book stores around the country to donate some of the proceeds from their 28 August sales to The Hero Initiative. Meanwhile, The Hero initiative has recruited more than 40 artists to “Wake Up and Draw” a birthday card to Jack next Wednesday. The art will be viewable at ComicArtFans.com and will be auctioned off to support the charity at a later date.

Jillian says, “I started the Kirby4Heroes campaign as a way to connect with my grandfather, who died the year before I was born. I’ve grown so much closer to him through my endeavors in this area. I have to admit I’m astounded by him as an artist, family member, and just as a kind human being. Raising funds for those in the comic book industry in need of financial and medical assistance is a cause my grandfather Jack would have championed. He never turned his back on a person in need.”

Kirby4Heroes has a Facebook page, and a website.

Farewell to Kirby Dynamics

I’d like to pass along an appreciation to Rob Steibel for his herculean effort of more than 1400 almost daily posts on his Kirby Dynamics blog on kirbymuseum.org for the past three years or so. Say what you will about his style or tactics, Rob is, without a doubt, as big a Jack Kirby advocate as they come.

New shirts, prints and minis at San Diego

The July convention blast continues with 5 days in San Diego – visit us at booth 5520 (up front, just inside the doors of Hall B near the Golden & Silver Age Pavilion. Right near the TwoMorrows Booth #1301).

We’ll have some new prints, t-shirts, and publications. Here’s the new shirt:

Will post here if we have some of these shirts available after the convention.

We’re also going to have 17″ by 22″ prints of Kirby’s spread from Street Code as well as a new 5″ by 7″ Street Code mini-comic.

Mark Badger will be debuting two of his Jack Kirby Tribute books, his self-published “Kirby Abstract”, and, published by the Museum, his adaptation of Act One of Shakespeare’s Julius Caesar (inspired by, but not using, Kirby’s Julius Caesar costume designs). It’s awesome!

A last minute addition, Charles Hatfield will be signing “Hand of Fire” at our booth again this year. Schedule to be posted asap!

We’ll also have available Erik Larsen‘s Kirby Dragon tribute poster, Arlen Schumer‘s “The Auteur Theory of Comics” and “Kirby Silver“, some “Angel” prints and posters from “Lord of Light/Argo”, stickers, membership premiums and more!

Stay tuned – we may have even more Lord of Light Kirby awesomeness available at the show!

Kirby Museum at Florida Supercon!

We’ll be set up at Florida Supercon in Miami starting the Fourth of July! Come by booth 936 where we’ll have Kirby prints, posters and stickers!

For Father’s Day from Jack Kirby’s Granddaughter Jillian

Jillian Kirby kicks off her Kirby4Heroes Campaign, which benefits the Hero Initiative, with a nice article titled “Real People, Real Heroes: A Father’s Day Tribute

Erik Larsen & Steve Coates made Calgary Expo a success

Another quick update to thank Kirby fan extraordinaire Steve Coates, who has supported the Kirby Museum’s appearances at the Calgary Expo for three years now, and powerhouse comic book cartoonist Erik Larsen for making this year’s Calgary Expo a resounding success.

In addition to drawing commissions for his many fans, Erik produced a special Kirby tribute print for the show. We have some signed prints available. Thanks Erik!

Steve, on the other hand, produced slideshows of Kirby covers and spreads, and had them both running during the whole show. Steve also offered buttons, covers and spreads that were “saved” from Kirby comics in the dollar bin. There was also a Kirby tribute panel on Sunday, with Erik, Tim Lasiuta, Michael Cho (a contributor to Jason Garrattley’s Kirby-Vision blog), Kyle Stevens from the nerd rock band Kirby Krackle, and me, Rand.
