The 2013 Convention Season begins! Here’s March…

In the coming weeks, the Kirby Museum will be attending:

The Comic Art Con, in Secaucus, NJ: 24 March. Tom Kraft will be scanning for our digital archive at Nostalgic Investments’ table.

WonderCon, in Anaheim, CA: 29-31 March. Rand Hoppe will be manning a Kirby Museum booth at #825. Tom Kraft will be scanning at Nostalgic Investments’ #412.

We wish we could be setting up at Asbury Park Comic Con, as we have in the past.

What!?? Happy New Year!?? C’mon…!

Just popping up to say that I’m in the midst of reworking the Museum’s website, which is why I haven’t posted in a while. I don’t want to add too much new content here. I have been contributing to the Museum’s Tumblr over at http://kirbymuseum.tumblr.com. The Museum blogs are still rockin’ away – see the list to the left on our home page – thanks to our wonderful volunteer bloggers Richard, Rob, Bob, Jason, and Norris. I’ve got a backlog, and some changes for The Kirby Effect in the works, too.

Thanks for all of your support! 2013 is looking to be a another great year for the Kirby Museum.

Changes – And Many Thanks To Harry Mendryk!

It’s been an honor to be hosting Harry Mendryk’s Simon & Kirby blog on the Kirby Museum’s site, so I’m sad to see that after more than six years and almost 700 entries, Harry posted his farewell today.

Thankfully, Harry has agreed to allow the blog to remain online. I know it is already a great resource, and expect it to remain so. If you haven’t visited, do it now!

Thanks again, Harry!

You want Kirby books? We’ll have them. You want Kirby posters? We’ll have them, too. What else do you want? Limited Edition prints? Yeah, we’ll have them, and t-shirts, too.

It’s from noon until seven pm with free admission at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Church.

“Look, Rip! Zat is no bird!” “I wouldn’t say it’s a plane, either!”

Kirby Museum at New York Comic Con booth 2378

Yep, the Kirby Museum will be at it again, setting up Jack Kirby central at New York Comic Con. We’ll be at booth 2378 in the Small Press area, where we’ll have not only our usual Kirby wonders, but also a few new items premiering, as well!

We’re excited to announce a number of new limited edition Jack Kirby giclees – “The Streets of Heaven”, “Psychedelic Fliers”, “Calpurnia”, “Pioneer Plaque”, and “Football Warriors”. Yes, we still offer the Psychedelic Fliers and Calpurnia as postcards and the Football Warriors as stickers, but, wow, you should see them as prints.

Also some new items containing Kirby-related work that have been donated to us to help raise funds for our Pop Up Museum on the Lower East Side – Dylan Todd‘s King T-shirt, and signed, limited editions of both Tom Morehouse’s incredible “The Power Packed Marvel Art of Jack Kirby” collage, and Arlen Schumer‘s 32 page “Jack Kirby Silver Edition”. A second printing of Arlen’s “The Auteur Theory Of Comics” booklet will be available, too.

All items mentioned above are NYCC exclusives – for now. The only exceptions are Arlen’s “Auteur Theory” for $25 in the US and $30 elsewhere, and Tom Morehouse’s collage for $50/$55. Just click on the Brick & Mortar Fund Donate button on this page, enter the appropriate amount, and tell us what you’d like.

A limited selection of Kirby comics and collections will be for sale, with net proceeds going to our Pop Up.

If you have Jack Kirby Original Art in your collection, please bring it to the show! Museum Trustee and WhatIfKirby.com proprietor Tom Kraft will be manning a high-end, large format scanner over at Bechara Maalouf’s Nostalgic Investments booth #410 to add scans to our Original Art Digital Archive.

Of course, we’re always looking for new members, so please considering joining us and supporting our efforts. We’ll have all our membership premiums available at the show, and the lucky thing is, if we run out stock, more is just a ferry boat ride away in Hoboken.

So come by, feed Mother Box with your donations! Join us and help us open our Pop Up!

The Kirby Museum will set up at Asbury Park Comic Convention 2 tomorrow!

That’s right, we had such a great time at Asbury Park Comic Con in the Spring, we had to do it again this Fall!

We’ll have Kirby books, posters, postcards, stickers and more!

Feed the Mother Box with your Brick and Mortar Fund donations!

One more exclamation point!

Have a NICE Jack Kirby weekend!

Museum member and writer Russell Payne is a guest at the Northants International Comic Expo (NICE) this weekend in Wicksteed Park, Kettering, Northamptonshire, England. He’ll be promoting the museum and sitting on a special Jack Kirby panel alongside artists Doug Braithwaite, John Watson and Shaky Kane discussing “Jack Kirby’s Influence On Modern Comics”. Come along and chat to Russell about Jack and the Kirby Museum and he’ll give you a Jack Kirby sticker!

Tickets are still available from the website.

Sunday! The Kirby Museum will be at Red & White Calgary Comic & Toy Expo

Steve Coates will be manning a Kirby Museum booth at the Calgary Red & White Comic & Toy Expo this coming Sunday. If you’re going to the show, stop by and say hello, why don’t you?

…who became Jack Kirby, visual storyteller, comic book genius, more than just a comic book artist, one of the foremost influences on our culture.

We celebrate Jack Kirby every day at the Kirby Museum, even opening on this date seven years ago.

Here are some things we recommend for today:

As I mentioned in my previous blog entry here, Kirby’s granddaughter Jillian has started the Kirby4Heroes campaign, which supports the Hero Initiative in its effort to create a safety net for yesterday’s comic book creators. Additionally, the Hero Initiative has recruited comic artists to “Wake Up And Draw” a birthday card for Jack. Follow the fun at #WakeUpAndDraw on Twitter.

Help us open a Jack Kirby Museum for three months on the Lower East Side, by donating to our Brick and Mortar Campaign. We are thankful for the all of the support that has brought us to 50% of our $30,000 goal.

Join the Kirby4Heroes campaign!

Jack Kirby’s youngest granddaughter, 16 year old Jillian Kirby, has announced Kirby4Heroes in a video on the LA Times’ Hero Complex, accompanied by an article from Geoff Boucher.

Jillian Kirby

Jillian’s idea is that on her grandfather’s 95th birthday, which is on August 28th, comic shops in California, as well as Midtown Comics in NYC, will donate a portion of sales to the Hero Initiative. The Hero Initiative is a wonderful non-profit organization that creates a financial safety net for yesterdays’ creators who may need emergency medical aid, financial support for essentials of life, and an avenue back into paying work.

If you can’t make it to a participating comic shop, a direct donation to the Hero Initiative tagged with Kirby4Heroes would be very welcome.
