Remembering 9/11

9/11 has nothing to do with Simon and Kirby but it does have something to do with me. I cannot give a good explanation as to why that is. I did know one person who died in the World Trade Center but I worked with him many years ago and frankly do not remember him very well. I live not very far from the site but work outside the city so I was not present to witness the actual events. But at each anniversary I find myself in a contemplative state of mind. So once again I would like to interrupt my normal subject with a small reminder of all the people we lost on this fateful day.

Actually there is a Simon and Kirby connection to 9/11. Shortly after 9/11 Joe Simon created a recreation of the famous Captain America Comics #1 cover replacing Hitler with Osama bin Laden. Because of questions concerning the copyright, Joe has never published this recreation. Perhaps the Simon estate will someday ask Marvel for permission. I feel the recreation is a nice tribute.

I never liked the phrase “people we lost” when referring to 9/11. I prefer “people who were murdered”. Never forget…

…especially today, as the last 3 years of weak apologizing in the Middle East bears its’ ugly fruit. We didn’t just backslide to a pre-9/11 mentality, we’re all the way back to 1979-level danger now.

    Odkin,

I find that the use of “people we lost” is very appropriate. Murder describes the action not the affect. Osama bin Laden was murdered but I certainly feel no loss with that event. Your use of “murder” comes from anger. That is an observation, not a criticism. There is nothing inappropriate with anger, it certainly is a much better reaction than forgetting 9/11. But for me the 9/11 anniversary brings a sadness about the loss of so many lives. I certainly do feel that makes me any more forgetful.

Quite a number of years ago, I heard Joe Simon speak at a New York con, one of the Phil Seuling productions. I remember his being asked by a member of the audience how he would approach Captain America today, and replying that he might have Captain America fighting terrorists. I thought it was a good answer then. It looks even better in retrospect.
