The ill-fated Overlord created the X-Pit, a trap to ensnare and punish Scott Free, at the behest of Granny Goodness. “[Overlord] needs no<\/em> discipline like my pouting, jealous<\/em> soldier boys! Overlord is also creative!<\/em> He makes<\/em> things for Granny Goodness! That’s why Granny asked him to build the X-Pit!<\/em> She has lost<\/em> her patience with rebellious boys! Granny Goodness wants to kill Scott Free!<\/em> He was the first<\/em> to run away from her institution!”<\/p>\n

Granny threatens her underlings: retrieve Mister Miracle or else… “But we know where<\/em> he is now, don’t<\/em> we?” screams the old battle-ax. “Get him! Get Scott Free! Bring him to Granny!<\/em> — Or take his place in the X-Pit!<\/em>\u201d The minions kidnap Oberon and what they think is Scott Free (it’s just a Follower) and deliver to Granny, and when the real Mister Miracle comes by to rescue his assistant, Granny springs the trap. “I’m here, Granny! But I can’t<\/em> stay long! Just to pick up a friend!” Granny demurs, “You’ll stay! <\/em>You’ll stay for eternity!<\/em> Open the X-Pit,<\/em> Overlord!” She then pushes a button and Scott and Oberon plunge into the X-Pit!<\/p>\n

There is an ominous<\/em> humming sound! — An eerie flash — as invisible forces rush<\/em> from a widening gap in the floor!!<\/p>\n

Granny: <\/strong>Ha ha ha ha ha<\/em> –! I’ve got<\/em> you, Mister Miracle!<\/p>\n

Scott Free: <\/strong>My Aero-Discs have been neutralized!<\/em> I’m falling!<\/em><\/p>\n

It is a long<\/em> fall, because the pit<\/em> is deep!<\/em> But the mad downward flight of its trapped victims is slowed<\/em> as they near the bottom!<\/p>\n

Scott Free: <\/strong>Don’t panic, Oberon! We won’t be crushed! The hidden force-poles are reversing<\/em> from attraction to repelling!<\/p>\n

At the bottom of the X-Pit<\/em> is a transparent cage<\/em> of unknown<\/em> substance! Its doors close<\/em> on its hapless prey as they drift<\/em> within its confines!!!<\/p>\n

Scott Free: <\/strong>We’re still<\/em> alive, Oberon! But prisoners<\/em> of Granny! And, believe me — this is no<\/em> ordinary prison!<\/p>\n

Oberon:<\/strong> That shouldn’t<\/em> stop you<\/em>, Scott! Not you — Mister Miracle!<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

The pair then brainstorm and Scott ponders what he knows about Granny Goodness and concludes, “She’ll sacrifice anyone and anything — for gifts — rewards!<\/em> On that<\/em> premise — and with these<\/em> studs — we must stake our lives!”<\/p>\n

There appear to be 15 tiny buttons — five rows of three — in the transparent container and Scott pushes one.<\/p>\n

\nOberon: <\/strong>You pressed one of those buttons — and, now, we’re frying!<\/em>
\n
\nScott Free: <\/strong>Hang on, Oberon!<\/em> I know this for what it is — a Torment-Circuit!<\/em> Made by the creator of this pit for Granny’s pleasure! [Pushes another button] Steel<\/em> yourself, Oberon! This is the Electro-Shock Cycle!<\/em><\/p>\n

Oberon: <\/strong>I feel like I’ve swallowed a thousand<\/em> hot needles!<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Pressing yet another stud, Scott and Oberon are suddenly engulfed in muck.<\/p>\n

Scott Free: <\/strong>I must<\/em> continue the cycle! I must<\/em> press another of the studs!<\/p>\n

Oberon: <\/strong>Do it!<\/em> No matter what<\/em> happens next — It’ll be better<\/em> than this! Whew! <\/em>This is a welcome<\/em> break! But I don’t <\/em>suppose Granny rigged this to last too<\/em> long!<\/p>\n

Scott Free: <\/strong>No! Look<\/em> about you, Oberon! Look at the quickly-rising mud!<\/em><\/p>\n

Oberon: <\/strong>Scott!<\/em> Do something! Before this mud covers<\/em> us!<\/p>\n

Scott Free: <\/strong>It will smother you<\/em> first! This way, friend!<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Using his right hand, Scott lifts Oberon above his head, keeping him out of the rising mud.<\/p>\n


\nOberon: <\/strong>It won’t<\/em> help, Scott! Try<\/em> to press the next cycle!<\/p>\n

Scott Free: <\/strong>Can’t<\/em> — The mud is hardening! Tough<\/em> to move —<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

At this point, like Granny, readers think Mister Miracle and his assistant are doomed… but, taa-dah! <\/em>The Super Escape Artist reappears to explain to Granny how the two got out of the X-Pit! After Granny threatens to kill Scott with her bare hands, she demands, “How did you do this? How?<\/em>\u201d<\/p>\n


\nScott Free: <\/strong>Fair enough!<\/em> Once I knew the Overlord<\/em> created the X-Pit,<\/em> I knew the make-up of its structure! Every<\/em> atom of the X-Pit<\/em> was linked to Overlord himself!<\/em> Even the studs<\/em> of the Torment-Circuit! I activated each terrible<\/em> cycle —<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

We see Scott pushing a new stud, telling us, “The mud is hardening fast<\/em> — holding<\/em> my arm — but my finger<\/em> is free — touching the next<\/em> stud –”<\/p>\n

Scott Free: <\/strong>Then the mud was gone — as if it had never<\/em> been there — because Overlord<\/em> was transforming its atoms into another<\/em> form of torment!<\/p>\n

Oberon struggles to his feet and asks, “W-what next<\/em>, Scott? What next?” Scott opens his shoulder access to Mother Box, replying, “Mother Box signals — radiation!<\/em>\u201d Then, jamming his shoulder into the studs, he declares, “And that makes her strong! Strong! Strike at the enemy, Mother Box!”<\/em><\/p>\n

Scott Free: <\/strong>I jammed<\/em> Mother Box into the Torment-Circuits — felt her power race<\/em> with vengeance toward their insidious source! <\/em>Somewhere, I could feel the power strike Overlord!<\/em> Somewhere, I could hear his silent<\/em> scream — somewhere, I felt him — die!<\/em>\u201d<\/p>\n

Granny: <\/strong>You killed<\/em> Overlord! You had him killed by a damnable Mother Box!<\/em><\/p>\n

Scott Free: <\/strong>I earned many<\/em> things when I left your institution — like these Aero-Discs<\/em> — on which Oberon and I rose<\/em> from that now useless<\/em> pit!<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

And so the demise of Overlord’s malevolent trap, the ex-X-Pit!<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
