Heroes!

Heroes Con starts tomorrow! The Kirby Museum will be set up at booth 1322 to 1421 with displays from our “A Jack Kirby Odyssey” exhibit we held in May including enlarged pencil copies of several complete 2001: A Space Odyssey issues. We will have our scanner to scan and archive Kirby art for the Kirby Digital Archive. If you have original art or photos of Jack, please bring them, we would love to add them for the archive.

We will also host a landmark 3-part panel at Heroes Con on Saturday called KING-SIZED KIRBY ANNUAL # 101, moderated by RAND HOPPE AND TOM KRAFT:

1: KIRBY 101—That’s right! An introduction to Jack Kirby – with no prerequisites! Essential for novices and devotees alike!

2: A celebration of the influence of Kirby with Michael Royer and Ed Piskor and John Morrow

3: Finally, a discussion and tour of the Kirby Museum

Take “A Jack Kirby Odyssey” in NYC May 11-13!

The Jack Kirby Museum is proud to announce our first pop-up event of 2018. A Jack Kirby Odyssey will celebrate the King of Comics’ visionary work adapting and expanding on Arthur C. Clarke and Stanley Kubrick’s sci-fi classic, 2001: A Space Odyssey. The Kirby Museum’s A Jack Kirby Odyssey will take place at One Art Space, located at 23 Warren Street in New York City, from May 11 through May 13.

Just in time to celebrate the 50th anniversary of Kubrick’s cinematic masterpiece, the Jack Kirby Museum will present an oversized reproduction Kirby’s adaptation of the movie, compilations of the photocopies of Kirby’s pencil art for his subsequent stories, which have never been reprinted, as well as dramatic, multimedia performances of three of these stories.

“Jack Kirby’s 2001: A Space Odyssey comics were pure Kosmic Kirby at the top of his craft, expanding on the 2001 story in ways not even masters like Kubrick or Clarke could have imagined,” says Kirby Museum Acting Director, Rand Hoppe. “We can’t wait for fans to have their minds blown by the stories AND the visuals.”

“The comics on display for A Jack Kirby Odyssey were painstakingly reproduced from the photocopies of Kirby’s pencil art,” adds Kirby Museum President, Tom Kraft. “The oversized comics at our Kirby 100 birthday celebration at One Art Space were big hits. We expect people will love seeing Kirby’s cosmic pencil art at large size, too.”

More programming will be announced shortly. For ongoing updates, check kirbymuseum.org, follow @JackKirbyMuseum on Twitter, and like facebook.com/KirbyMuseum.

“Jack Kirby: 100 Years” Event in NYC a Huge Success

This slideshow requires JavaScript.

We’d like to thank everyone who came out to our Jack Kirby: 100 Years celebration of Kirby’s centenary in New York City last month. The event, which ran from August 27 through August 30, was our humble attempt to pay tribute to the scope and breadth of Kirby’s career, and to allow fans a place to celebrate together.

For Kirby’s birthday on the 28th, we served cake and refreshments to attendees, and presented Kirby Museum director Randolph Hoppe’s biographical talk/visual presentation on Kirby’s life. All profits from that day’s fundraising efforts were donated to The Hero Initiative, in honor of Jillian Kirby’s ongoing Kirby4Heroes campaign.

We were overwhelmed by the support we received both from attendees, and our hosts, the One Art Space gallery in Manhattan’s Tribeca neighborhood, who were gracious, helpful, and generous with not only the wonderful gallery space they provided for us, but with their time and personal attention to our needs.

“Jack Kirby: 100 Years” in New York City

The Jack Kirby Museum Presents

A Special Four Day Event Celebrating the Life and Legacy of Jack Kirby

NEW YORK, NY (August 15, 2017) – Jack Kirby, the co-creator of Captain America, The Avengers, X-Men, Fantastic Four, The Incredible Hulk, and many other pop culture icons, played an indispensable role in the emergence of comics as an art form. Kirby is to comics what Hitchcock or Spielberg are to movies, Babe Ruth is to baseball, or The Beatles are to rock n’ roll. Not only was Kirby incredibly prolific and influential, but he was an innovator whose work has come to define fantastic storytelling in comics and beyond.

To mark the 100th anniversary of Jack Kirby’s birth, the Jack Kirby Museum and Research Center will open a special, limited-engagement event, celebrating the life, legacy, and boundless creativity of the King of Comics. “Jack Kirby – 100 Years” will take place at One Art Space, located at 23 Warren Street in New York City, from August 27-30.

Jack Kirby 100 Years Highlights Include:

  • Oversized reproductions of some of Kirby’s most famous work.

  • An introduction to the Kirby Museum by Trustees Tom Kraft and Rand Hoppe

Kirby 100 Print Series Release at the Five Points Festival

The Kirby Museum is pleased to release our first set of prints celebrating Jack Kirby’s centenary. To start the series we have digitally remastered and restored the Tribes Trilogy paintings. The Trilogy was drawn, inked and colored by Jack Kirby. Prints will be on display and for sale at our booth (#445) during this weekend’s Five Points Festival on NYC’s Lower East Side. Prints cost $60.00 each or all 3 with the same series number for $200.00. Prints will be for sale soon on our website.

More about the prints:

  • This first set is limited to an edition of 50 with the first 10 numbers held in reserve
  • Each print has the Kirby 100 logo and an embossed Kirby Museum logo
  • Prints are 18 x 24 inches
  • Printed as high resolution Giclée using Epson UltraChrome HD pigment inks
  • Paper is Epson Hot Press Natural, Smooth Fine Art heavy weight (16mm) paper and is archival, acid-free, 100% cotton fiber
  • Each print is packaged in a 1mm resealable archival mylar sleeve

These prints were remastered from high resolution scans of the original art held in our Kirby Digital Archive. Colors were enhanced to match as closely as possible the original Dr. Ph. Martin ink colors used by Kirby. For example, some of the edges of the art showed the bright colors of the original colors because they had been protected from fading by being under mats or frames. The biggest challenge was the Lizard print. The edges were bright pink however the rest had faded. Restoring the pink gave this print impact.

All sales will benefit the museum in our ongoing efforts to study, preserve, and publicize the work of Jack Kirby.

Jack Kirby: Pencils And Inks from the Kirby Museum and IDW!

Just a few weeks ago, the Kirby Museum’s co-production with IDW – with thanks to the Kirby Estate, DC Comics, and Mike Royer – a book titled “Jack Kirby: Pencils and Inks” was released to comics specialty shops. As far as we can tell, it’s a smash!

“Jack Kirby: Pencils And Inks” presents Kirby’s first Demon, Kamandi, and OMAC stories, with the photocopies of his pencil art alongside the original art as inked and lettered by Mike Royer. Royer and Lisa Kirby provide illuminating essays.

Thanks to our incredibly talented and resourceful Tom Kraft, who designed and packaged the book, as well as IDW’s Scott Dunbier, this book represents the Jack Kirby Museum’s first work with a publisher, and is hopefully not the last.

We are now accepting orders for the limited Jack Kirby Museum edition of “Jack Kirby: Pencils and Inks.” The limited edition features a variant photo cover of Kirby drawing a Kamandi page. The rare photo was graciously provided by David Folkman. We have 100 copies of the limited edition, 50 of which have a tipped-in card signed by artist and inker Mike Royer.

All sales will benefit the museum in our ongoing efforts to study, preserve, and publicize the work of Jack Kirby.
