I love Joe Simons art work on Captain America. He and Jack kirby are one of my main influences of being a comic book artist. I would like to get published someday for my work.

Nick,

The good news is that I have found no evidence that Joe's technique of constructing covers from assorted pieces was used during the S&K period. He seemed to have adopted it after the breakup. The bad news is that as we shall see Joe was not adverse to swiping, which in the end can have the same effect.

Joe's adoption of different styles makes identification difficult. Hopefully I will provide enough examples to help you and others recognize his touch. But I am not immune to the problems in identify Joe's work. The main reason I intend to end this series at the time of the breakup is that I am still struggling to identify Joe's work afterwards. Joe adopted a new style for covers for the early 60's Prize romances. And there is the possibility he did some of the relaunched Black Magic covers. Not to mentioned his ghosting of Dick Tracy covers.

Harry,

As someone who has disagreed with you from time to time on various covers, you make some valid points concerning art identification. One of the problems in identifying Simon's style may be his ability to mimic other styles. Another problem are the changes that occured on covers. Simon has cut and pasted covers from time to time, leading to partial Kirby/partial Simon (or other artists).Simon certainly does have identifying traits, but I admit I need to see more and grow more confident in identifying Simon's style.

Harry, I value your knowledge and dedication .You are doing a great job with your efforts on the Simon and Kirby Blog and I hope to learn more from your writings in the future.

Best,
