As to AT #1, for now we shall just have to agree to disagree. Joe Simon was a master of adopting other peoples style. While working for Fox he produced covers in Lou Fine's style that was so good that that they fooled the experts for years. Still fooling them since a recent Fine reprint volume lists some of them in a checklist of Fine's work. This despite the fact that a large number of those covers were signed! He used the same talent during the S&K
years. Someday maybe I will gather all the evidence together for this, but that would be an even greater effort then this series of posts. But I will say it requires not just looking for Kirby features, but also looking for Simon's touch.

As for AT #3 your point is well taken. But as I said in the chapter, that cover seems based on an unused version. I have only seen a low-res image of the unused one. I am not ready to pass judgement on that one until I see something better.

Harry,

To my eye the cover of Alarming Tales # 1 looks more Kirby than Simon, particularly the figures in the foreground look like typical Kirby poses, especially the man pointing on the right.

I do see Simon's hand on the man in the chair and the effects you noted, but I suspect Kirby was involved in this cover.

Alarming Tales # 3 actually looks more like Simon's work to me. I don't see any distinctive Kirby traits, aside from the figure of the man, but even he has a Simon "feel".
