Love Romances #91 [1961] – Cover

by

Jack Kirby and Vince Colletta provide the cover for this Marvel romance comic. I really like the movie poster style on this one, with just a hint of what the actual story might be about. A nice change from the exposition and blurb heavy usual style. This is one of my favourite of the roughly two dozen romance covers Kirby did at Marvel.

Update from the comments, the background figure is actually taken from Kirby’s cover to LR #85, and it’s not clear if the foreground figures are original or modified from a Kirby drawing or from elsewhere. Let us know what you think.

I’m not 100% sure this is a complete Kirby cover. The foreground figures look very different than the usual Kirby style (although that may be due to heavy alterations by Vince Colletta). The background figure appears to be by Kirby, although I seem to recall that it was from an earlier cover.

Hm, you’re right, the background girl is from LR #85. Never noticed that before. If girl in the foreground still looks like heavily-Colletta-ed Kirby, but if it’s not it’s a pretty good job by Colletta.

The movie-poster style composition still works nicely as a contrast to the caption and dialogue heavy norm of most Marvel romance covers.
