This Blog Wants You

No new posts this week as Kirby-Vision takes a short break, so here’s a reminder of our call for contributions for our annual Jack Kirby birthday portrait gallery.

Sunday 28th August marks the 94th anniversary of the birth of Jack Kirby. To celebrate the occasion, Kirby-Vision would like to invite all of our readers to send in their portraits of ‘The King of Comics’.

You can find our previous galleries here and here, both of which were a great success. We’re looking forward to seeing what you can all come up with this year and if you can’t find the time to contribute, then please spread the word to any Kirby fans that you may know.

The deadline for inclusion is Friday 26th August. All submissions can be sent to the usual address, please mark your emails “Birthday”. Thank you.

to be continued…

Kirby-Vision will be taking a break for the next few weeks but fear not as we’ll be back in April with more of the same, so keep those submissions coming in to the usual address. Meanwhile here’s a couple of Kirby-related links to keep you going until we return.

Brendan Tobin and Pedro Delgaro‘s annual celebration one of Kirby’s most bizarre creations, March MODOK Madness, is currently in full swing with some equally bizarre fan-art posted daily.

25 writers & artists analyze Jack’s work panel-by-panel in a series of short articles entitled, Kirb Your Enthusiasm, at the Hilobrow website.

And don’t forget to check out the sterling work of my fellow bloggers here at The Kirby Museum. All of the blogs hosted here are listed on the left-hand side of the home page which you can access by clicking the Museum logo at the top of this page.

British illustrator Jonathan Edwards made his debut in the influential comic magazine Deadline. Since then has forged a successful career as a commercial illustration and a long standing relationship with The Guardian newspaper providing editorial art. He is also the curator of Draw Serge, an illustrative tribute blog dedicated to the French singer-songwriter Serge Gainsbourg. You can find more of Jonathan’s energetic work at his website and blog.

A big shout-out to all the artists who took the time to contribute to today’s gallery. And of course a huge thank you to Jack Kirby whose inspiration lives on. Long live The King!

Happy First Anniversary

KVAnniversary

Here’s a little montage I’ve put together to celebrate Kirby-Vision‘s first anniversary. It’s been a fantastic year for the blog since it’s humble beginnings as The Kirby Project. I’d like to shout-out a huge thank you to all the wonderful artists who have submitted artwork or granted permission to re-blog existing work. There’s been some amazing stuff from fresh new talent and seasoned professionals alike. My sincere thanks also to all the people who have spread the Kirby-Vision word via their own blogs, websites etc. Here’s to another year of celebrating Jack’s extraordinary influence.

Fantasia Fun #49

Now that Disney have agreed to buy Marvel Comics, will we see a return to more child friendly comics?

A more cynical first draft of this piece here found at my flickr page here. The original cover to Fantastic Four #49, by Jack Kirby and Joe Sinnott, can be found here.

As inker/letterer for the majority of Jack’s work throughout the 70′s and 80′s, Mike Royer, is well known to fans of the site. My thanks to Mike for his permission to use this portrait and to Rob Steibel for submitting the commisioned artwork.

KIRBY-VISION would like to send out a huge thank you to all the artists who took the time to contribute to the gallery. Despite looming deadlines and moving houses (and other such excuses) you really pulled out all the stops to pay tribute to Jack’s inspiration.
